No. SABOR does not back any political party but supports candidates and legislation that are favorable to the real estate industry and property owners. This support is offered when we have determined a candidate or legislation is favorable to REALTOR® issues. Recommendations are made by members to the Board of Directors who then affirm or deny the endorsements.
We have a full time Government Affairs team which works closely with Texas REALTORS® and the National Association of REALTORS® to monitor legislation that could affect the real estate industry. The REALTOR® Party is a powerful alliance of REALTORS® and REALTOR® Associations working to protect and promote homeownership and property investment. The REALTOR® Party speaks with one voice to advance candidates and public policies that build strong communities and promote a vibrant business environment.
Monies raised through TREPAC are directly used to preserve private property rights and protect the real estate industry. Through TREPAC, numerous legislation has been defeated or supported that made a crucial difference in how you do business every day in Texas.
The Texas Association of REALTORS® Political Action Committee (TREPAC) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that’s purpose is to provide financial assistance to the election campaigns of qualified candidates.
The first step in the process is to identify each of the candidates running for an elected position. We then invite each of these candidates in to meet with a panel of members from our Government Affairs Committee to discuss their stance on issues important to real estate. It is important to note we only focus on real estate related issues. Once the candidates have been interviewed, the committee members determine which candidates most demonstrate a dedication to supporting issues important to real estate and the REALTOR® community. These candidates are then presented by the Government Affairs Committee to SABOR’s Board of Directors for final approval. The Committee also has the option of not making an endorsement. For local races, once the Board of Directors approves the recommendation, the candidate is endorsed by the Board officially. For races occurring at the state level or above, the recommendation is sent to Texas REALTORS® for final approval.
Membership dues do not fund financial endorsements of candidates. Financial endorsements are only made through funds specifically contributed to TREPAC by members individually on a voluntary basis.
