Community Service Member Spotlight: Legend of the Southside

REALTOR® Beatrice Briseño Carreon has spent decades helping families make the Southside their home. A REALTOR® for 25 years, and a SABOR member just as long, Beatrice’s dedication to building community in her neighborhood earned her the South San Antonio Chamber of Commerce’s “Legend of the Southside” honor last November which recognized her 20 years of service to the community.

A graduate of Harlandale High School, Beatrice credits her teachers for showing her that one person can make a difference in someone’s life. She’s carried that lesson with her as she started her real estate career and decided to be that “one person” on the Southside, helping families who had often been marginalized to receive the care and attention they needed to achieve their homeownership dreams.

After a few years in the business, she even opened her own office and was the first minority-owned brokerage in the Southside. “I was willing to invest time and money. I knew my part of town and I knew that the families here needed someone to help them achieve the dream of homeownership. Every time I handed over keys to a family to their very own home it made me feel like I too had made a positive difference in their lives,” she said.

In 2006, she became the first Latina in San Antonio to own and operate a major real estate franchise which she owns along with her two daughters: “It makes me proud to have my daughters and daughter-in-law work with me and know that they feel the same way about our community as I do.”

She also began serving with the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals around this time, and eventually became President. She continues to be an active member.

In 2018, her company broke ground on a new office in the Southside, the first of its kind in the area. “No one has ever built a brand new real estate office in this part of town,” she said. “Our new office will have enough space to hold community classes. Sheriff Salazar has already asked if he can have some community safety classes there. We also intend to offer home buying classes, information on how to start getting ready to buy a home, and more.”

Though the road has not always been easy, her passion for her community has never wavered. When asked for words of wisdom for those thinking of giving back, she has some simple but powerful advice: “Do it. Make a difference in peoples’ lives. It’s the greatest gift you can give!”
